Wound healing and nutrition

Healing a wound is a complex process involving the entire body. The treatment of the wound by qualified specialists and with products tailored to the current wound situation is an essential pillar of successful wound therapy. However, even with optimal external care, the actual new tissue formation always starts from the patient's body and therefore stems from within.

This has been shown, among other things, that the nutrient and energy requirements of those affected increase significantly during wound healing. For a successful new tissue formation it is necessary that sufficient building blocks and energy are made available through the nutrition. Therefore, among many other international guidelines, the guideline on the prevention and therapy of pressure ulcers as well as the S3 guideline of the German Society for Nutritional Medicine recommend that nutrition be taken into account in wound therapy. Wound healing can thus be actively supported by the patient through nutrition.
